Arizona Republic calls out Hobbs for “not true” claim about recent controversial veto

GILBERT, AZ—Katie Hobbs is “under fire” for misleading Arizonans on her recent veto of a bill to rename the Loop 202 freeway after the late, great Charlie Kirk. Hobbs claimed she vetoed the bill in part because it would have eliminated a previous namesake of the freeway, but the Arizona Republic deemed Hobbs’ claim as “not true”.

From Stacey Barchenger of the Arizona Republic:

“Gov. Katie Hobbs said in a recent interview that she vetoed a bill renaming the Loop 202 highway for the slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk because the measure would have replaced a section of the highway already named for former Congressman Ed Pastor.

But the bill would not have done so.

Senate Bill 1010 said explicitly it was “not intended to supersede any current designation assigned to the Loop 202.” That would include leaving unchanged a section named for former U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, according to the bill’s sponsor, Senate President Warren Petersen.”

Senate President and candidate for Attorney General Warren Petersen sponsored the bill, which passed through the Arizona House of Representatives and State Senate earlier this year.

Arizonans cannot afford Katie Hobbs and they cannot trust her either. Not only was Katie Hobbs’ decision to veto the Charlie Kirk Loop 202 bill petty and callous, she’s now shamefully misleading Arizonans about why she did it,” said Drew Sexton, Senior Advisor to the Biggs for Arizona campaign. “Hobbs remains under investigation for an alleged pay-to-play scheme and has already been caught giving out hundreds of thousands in taxpayer dollars to political allies and cronies. This was a dishonest, partisan act by a weak and ineffective Governor who has consistently failed to rise to the moment and lead our state.
