Congressman Andy Biggs returned to the Arizona Senate, with fellow conservatives in tow, to call for the end of federal oversight of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Biggs, chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance and a candidate for governor, led a congressional field hearing Feb. 13 from the Senate, where he served as a state lawmaker for six years over a decade ago. Only Republican members of the committee participated.
The topic was continued independent oversight of the sheriff’s office, which has been in place for more than a decade, after a federal judge found civil rights violations and racial profiling occurred under the tenure of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
